Lakewood Schools To Begin Year Online Only

LAKEWOOD, OH — Following the recommendations of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, the Lakewood Schools will implement a remote-only education model to begin the school year. "We know this is very frustrating and stressful for the families who were relying on sending their children back to the school buildings this fall," said Superintendent Michael Barnes in a letter to the community. He indicated that officials would be discussing the remote-only education plan during a public meeting on YouTube at 7 p.m. on Monday. The district is also suspending all extracurricular activities, including sports, per the board's recommendation. There is no timeline for resuming those activities. Based on the county board's recommendations, the reopening plan for Lakewood Schools is also shifting. The plan will remain tied to the state's public health alert system for COVID-19, which classifies counties based on the virus' spread locally. However, the plan will now look like this: If Cuyahoga County is at Level 1 (yellow rating) the district will use the "All in" model — Students will be in school five days a week, following safety protocols and spaced 3 feet apart at all timesLevel 2 (orange) the district will use the "Partial" model — Students will be in school every other dayAttendance will be based on a student's last name (students with last names beginning with letters A-K in school one day, students with last names beginning with letters L-Z in school the next day)Level 3 (red) and Level 4 (purple) rating — All students will have remote learningThe full recommendation from the board has been posted online.
