LAKEWOOD, OH — Two Lakewood High students have been named National Merit Semifinalists.
This year's two semifinalists from Lakewood are Gina Marjanovic and Anastasia Seckers. Both students will move on in the competition and have a chance to secure college scholarships.
"Congratulations to Gina and Nina! We are proud of the hard work and dedication that our two National Merit Semifinalists have put in over their school years to be able to accomplish this outstanding recognition and we tip our hats to their teachers and parents as well," Superintendent Michael Barnes said.
More than 1.5 million students annually apply for National Merit Scholarships. When students take the PSAT they are automatically entered into the fray. Less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors become semifinalists.
Only 16,000 students earn National Merit Semifinalist distinctions annually. Semifinalists can become Finalists and compete for $30 million in scholarships.
"Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference," the scholarship foundation said.
