ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 981 recently announced it is accepting applications for the VFW Post 981 Wally Luettschwager Memorial Scholarship Grant. This scholarship grant, in an amount as high as $3,000, is awarded annually in the memory of our comrade Wally Luettschwager, according to a press release.
Students who attend (or will attend) college in a degree program or a recognized trade school should apply. The ideal candidate will be an active duty or reserve member of the military, honorably discharged veteran, or a direct descendant of an honorably discharged veteran.
All other things being equal, preference will be given to residents of the Northwest Cook County suburbs and adjacent areas in Lake County, with additional consideration to those towns and villages served by Post 981.
Luettschwager, a lifelong resident of Arlington Heights, served honorably in the US Army in combat during the Korean War. He came home and was an active member of VFW Post 981 for over 60 years in many capacities including Commander.
According to the release, Luettschwager played an integral part in the organizing and running of the Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade which has been part of the community for over 100 years.
The application form is available on VFW Post 981's website – www.vfwpost981.com. Applications will be accepted beginning Jan. 1, 2021. The deadline for submitting the application for the Fall 2021 school year is March 1, 2021. Finalists will be interviewed by the Post Scholarship Committee. The recipient will be announced by May 1, 2021.
