If you study history and read the actual words of those who preceded us, all the way back to the nation's founding, politicians have fretted about the same issues you raise. Democracy is an experiment, ever evolving, ever changing. One thing you said I agree with, however. Eventually the polar extremes of both parties will become so antipode, centrists in both parties will unite and form a separate party and we will become a three party (or more) parliamentary government system.
