Snippets from article on US State Department Web site, address at end. "There was no one process of decolonization. In some areas, it was peaceful, and orderly. In many others, independence was achieved only after a protracted revolution." "While the United States generally supported the concept of national self-determination,... " "The newly independent nations that emerged in the 1950s and the 1960s became an important factor in changing the balance of power within the United Nations. In 1946, there were 35 member states in the United Nations; as the newly independent nations of the “third world” joined the organization, by 1970 membership had swelled to 127." Lots more there https://history.state.gov/milestones/1945-1952/asia-and-africa READ ALL OF IT. Don't complain about the source. It's the US Government. Now my commentary. In the late 1700s, the majority of people in the colonies wanted to separate from the tyrannical government controlling them, so they voted to exercise self determination and separate from Great Britain. "Americans were fearful of a war being necessary in order to gain their independence. It happened, many lives lost. Then, about 80 years later, another group wanted to separate from their tyrannical government, and voted to separate. The central government which had control over them did not want them to have the same right of self determination that they had in 1776. The US government fought a terrible war in which more Americans were killed than in in WWI, WWII, and Vietnam combined. All to prevent them from exercising self determination. Now, the people of Donpass want to separate from their government, and have a natural fear that their government might do what the US government did to prevent their self determination, namely a war. So, Russia, with whom the separatists favor to govern them, has positioned military in Donpass just in case Ukraine president decides to fight them. Ukraine would surely get help from the now "anti self determination" government of the US. Strange how the US has supported most of the many incidents of peoples' exercising self determination and independence over the past 80 years, but have opposed this one. Remember, it was the US that organized and financed the Cuban revolution against Batista, and look how that turned out!
