Description

Explore wetland birds on this evening hike at Cherokee Marsh. The marsh comes alive in spring, especially in the evening. Join us for this special evening hike of the marsh as we look and listen for spring birds such as the sandhill crane, snipe, waterfowl and the interesting woodcock. We will take about a 1 mile hike to see and hear birds and then wait and listen and watch for the woodcock at dusk. The woodcock make a loud "peenting" sound which can be heard from the trail. They then fly into the air and do a whirling dance that is a sight to see. A snack will be provided on this hike. Dress for the weather and wear shoes that can withstand some water. The trail can be wet if there has been a recent rain. We will cancel this event if weather is severe. This event is organized by three organizations: Outdoors 123, Dane County Parks and the Ice Age Trail Alliance. Outdoors 123 was founded by Diane Schwartz. Diane Schwartz has led hundreds of hikes in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest in the past 10+ years for children and adults through her work as a teacher, Meet-up leader and through her own business, Outdoors 123. She holds a M.S. Land Resources, a B.S. in Agricultural Journalism and a B.S. Education all from UW-Madison. She has worked for the Department of Natural Resources where she wrote hundreds of exhibits that interpret the natural and cultural history of state parks and natural areas. She lives in Madison, Wisconsin. She currently works at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction in the Charter School Program.
