ROYA presents a new series for communal gatherings and music - SMALL TALK: RAP SESSIONS ROYA presents SMALL TALK: RAP SESSIONS is the debut of a series of communal gatherings in collaboration with Rap Sessions hosted by Bakari Kitwana to commemorate and celebrate the legacy of Jazz, Blues, and Hip Hop for social justice. Billy Taylor declared Jazz “the Classical music of America'' - rightfully asserting the significant role Jazz has in revolutionizing the music landscape, not only in its composition but in the power of infinite stories that reverberate beyond its audience. Fast forward, Hip Hop grew from the foundations of Jazz and Blues to continue the Black diaspora’s communal practices of storytelling, resilience, and resistance through song and dance. What is the artist’s role if not to reflect their times? For over five decades, Hip Hop artists continue to shape culture, push the status quo, and engage in grassroots resistance to confining themselves, their history, and the art of Hip Hop into a single box. Hip Hop is an art, a culture, a movement, and a revolution. It comes as no surprise that the music of the Diaspora serves a revolutionary role contemporary to revolutionary times. SMALL TALK: RAP SESSIONS will feature a conversation between contemporary pioneers in this space who continue to push the art for liberation and then end the night with some live music by local artists. This event is FREE. All ages welcome. Refreshments will be served. Music will be flowing!! LOCATION: The Reevx Lab on 2379 Washington St, Roxbury, MA 02119.
