Workshop for Educators by Finnish Master Educator Petteri Elo In this workshop, two experts in pedagogy and mindfulness present a two-fold path to healing and reinvigorating classrooms as we enter a new era of learning. The best of the progressive Finnish approaches meets the cutting edge of mindfulness and social & emotional learning to present a way forward focused on physiological and psychological safety, a pedagogy of collaboration, and a focus on self-determination. The result...classrooms that flourish! The institution and assumptions of traditional education have been rattled by new stressors over the last two years. Unlike previous challenges, this time it seems we must adapt or risk breaking completely. Teacher burnout and staffing shortages are rampant. The "Summer Slide" (the traditional lapse in academic gains over the summer) became the "COVID Slide" and has now been dubbed the "COVID Melt"--a phenomenon affecting underserved students most profoundly. How do we find our way to a healthy, sustainable way of teaching and learning? Top-down approaches will be important, for sure, and policymakers must be well-informed and sincere in understanding the challenges faced. But in this workshop, we present an approach that starts classroom by classroom, creating space for every student, and every teacher, to feel empowered to flourish in the decades to come.
