The National Weather Service (NWS) Des Moines and Polk County Emergency Management offers Storm Spotter training classes every spring. The National Weather Service (NWS) Des Moines and Polk County Emergency Management offers Storm Spotter training classes every spring. This year’s class will be conducted on March 22nd from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm at Polk County Emergency Management Emergency Operations Center. Storm Spotter volunteers are important to the community to provide severe weather reports. Spotters relay their reports to the Weather Service as they see it unfolding. This information is used by NWS forecasters to track storms and alert the public to dangerous weather situations. Reports from trained weather spotters have saved countless lives, especially during heavy rain, thunderstorms, and wind storms. Space is limited and registration is required. Mission: Protecting the whole community by coordinating, supporting and integrating activities to mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from all hazards.  Serving the communities of: Alleman, Altoona, Ankeny, Bondurant, Clive, Des Moines, Elkhart, Grimes, Johnston, Mitchellville, Pleasant Hill, Polk City, Polk County, Runnells, Urbandale, West Des Moines and Windsor Heights
