Calvin and the Coal Cars: What do you get when you throw together a pedal steel player from the Seattle alternative scene, a Pink Floyd enthusiast guitar player from Wisconsin, a Warp Tour punk bassist from North Dakota, a meticulous funk/punk/rock drummer out of Montana, and a singer-songwriter from the cornfields of Iowa? Well, most wouldn’t jump to “a high energy alt-country/Americana band”, but that’s exactly what Calvin and the Coal Cars are. Calvin and the Coal Cars came together in the spring of 2018 with Brian Wetzstein (pedal steel guitar), Dan Upton (lead guitar), Matt Windmueller (bass), Colton Gable (drums), and Lee Calvin (vocals and guitar). In their short time together, the guys have had the honor of sharing the stage with national touring acts such as Asleep at the Wheel, Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Byrd, Whitey Morgan and the 78’s, Aaron Watson, and Sawyer Brown, as well as headlining their own shows at some of the region’s most sought out venues and events. In 2019 they were honored at the Magic City Music Awards by winning “Country Act of the Year” and “New Band of the Year”, along with second in “Original Song of the Year” for their song “Gypsy Girl”. Matt was also honored with a second place finish for “Bass Player of the Year”. Over the past two years The Coal Cars have released two studio albums and have recently recorded three new singles for future release. Uncle Chad Okrusch: Chad has shared gigs with Montana favorites Tom Catmull, Tony Polecastro, Sean Devine, Wylie & the Wild West, & Chris Cunningham. He has shared the stage with national touring artists Aaron Espe, Christy Hays, and Connor Garvey. He's opened for country music stars Blake Shelton and Lee Brice. And he's opened for alt-country and Americana legend Robert Earl Keen. He's played at many music festivals including Red Ants Pants, Montana Folk Festival, Red Lodge Songwriters Festival, Storyhill Fest, & The Headwaters Country Jam. Chad is currently working on a double album project that will include an album of new, original songs and album of tributes to his favorite songwriters. An interesting side note, Chad is a tenured professor of communication and media studies at Montana Tech in Butte, Montana. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication and does academic and community work focused on helping affected publics become meaningful participants in environmental restoration activities that concern them.
