Description

Come join The Patch Works, as we guide you through the history of Cabbagetown, one of the country’s last, inner-city mill towns still intact Come join The Patch Works, as we guide you through the history of Cabbagetown, one of the country’s last, inner-city mill towns still intact today. We’ll take you on a journey that spans 140 years, from the 19th-century founding of Fulton Bag & Cotton Mills to today’s gentrified community. You’ll learn about Jacob Elsas, the German-speaking Jewish immigrant who came from a working-class peddler background and created one of the largest and most-successful cotton mill operations in the United States; you’ll learn about the Mill Village’s residents, who moved to Atlanta seeking a steady paycheck and ended up developing a unique mountain culture that endured for over a hundred years inside an ever-changing metropolis. Cabbagetown helped revitalize and rebuild (literally) not only post-Civil War Atlanta, but the American South as well. Our tour will give you a deeper understanding as to why Atlanta’s history needs to be remembered and preserved. And please wear comfortable walking shoes! Please park in Agave’s parking lot on Boulevard. Parking is available there until 4pm, after which cars must be moved. The tour will begin outside The Mill's back gate on Carroll Street. All Phoenix Flies programs adhere to current City of Atlanta health and safety guidelines. All guests, program partners, and employees must wear CDC approved masks for the duration of their visit. The Atlanta Preservation Center is the City’s private non-profit preservation organization. Founded in 1979, the Atlanta Preservation Center promotes the preservation of Atlanta's architecturally, historically and culturally significant buildings, neighborhoods and landscapes through education and advocacy. We are excited for our 19th year of Phoenix Flies, a three-week city-wide celebration of living landmarks. Created in 2003, Phoenix Flies provides an opportunity to learn about, celebrate and strengthen Atlanta’s historic and cultural assets. These events, taking place March 5-27, will be live on February 18!
