Explore the architecture and legacy businesses of L5P, the first commercial district built outside of downtown Atlanta in 1908 Little 5 Points (L5P), built in 1908, was the first commercial district outside of downtown Atlanta. L5P grew into an avant garde arts and shopping district, serving the in-town neighborhoods of Inman Park and Candler Park. By the 1930's, there were many successful businesses in L5P, including three movie theaters (The Palace, The Euclid and the Little Five Points), three grocery stores (Kroger, Colonial and A&P), four drug stores, and three barbershops. By the 1960's, L5P was struggling economically. In 1975, the City of Atlanta awarded community grants to L5P, which were used for public improvements. These grants and the entrepreneurial spirit of community-based businesses helped spur the revitalization. On our tour, we will explore the architecture and legacy businesses of L5P. Tour begins at L5P Center for Arts & Community (meet outside at the corner of Euclid and Austin) and ends at the Wrecking Bar Brewpub. Subsequent, on-going tours will be self-guided with map available at www.L5PA.com. All Phoenix Flies programs adhere to current City of Atlanta health and safety guidelines. All guests, program partners, and employees must wear CDC approved masks for the duration of their visit. The Atlanta Preservation Center is the City’s private non-profit preservation organization. Founded in 1979, the Atlanta Preservation Center promotes the preservation of Atlanta's architecturally, historically and culturally significant buildings, neighborhoods and landscapes through education and advocacy. We are excited for our 19th year of Phoenix Flies, a three-week city-wide celebration of living landmarks. Created in 2003, Phoenix Flies provides an opportunity to learn about, celebrate and strengthen Atlanta’s historic and cultural assets.
