DUBLIN, CA — Hundreds of protesters in Dublin took over local streets Monday afternoon, shutting down traffic in all directions in the area of Dublin Boulevard and Dougherty Road, police said. Protesters began at Emerald Glen Park, chanting, "No justice, no peace," as have demonstrators across the country rallying in the wake of George Floyd's death. Attendees described the demonstration as peaceful. Floyd, a black man, died after a white Minneapolis police officer placed his knee on Floyd's neck, pinning him down after arresting him following a call reporting suspected forgery at a store. Floyd said he could not breathe and had no pulse when he was taken into an ambulance. Demonstrators proceeded from the park to the intersection, carrying signs that read "black lives matter," "white silence equals white consent" and "I can't breathe," which Floyd repeated multiple times before his death. Police advised the public to avoid the area until about 4:10 p.m. Widespread looting occurred over the weekend. Despite rumors of looting at a Target in Dublin, Dublin Police Capt. Nate Schmidt said there have been no looting incidents at Dublin Target stores.
