Description

Come celebrate the opening of this important exhibit on school desegregation which highlights stories from our South Minneapolis community. The start of the 2021-2022 school year marked the 50th anniversary of the pairing of Hale and Field Elementary in South Minneapolis. This controversial initiative to combat racial segregation in the district polarized the city and had a significant impact on the lives of those involved. Separate Not Equal pays tribute to the parents and educators who fought for desegregation, celebrates the students who attended these schools, and encourages guests to reflect on the state of our school system today.   We will have project team members participating in panel discussions throughout the day, refreshments, and a time capsule activity for you to engage in!  Separate Not Equal is a community-based public history project led by a team including Heidi Adelsman, Daniel Bergin, Cindy Booker, Hannah Coble, Acoma Gaither, Sophie Hunt, Alyssa Thiede, and Carissa Thomas; in partnership with Design & Agency at Augsburg University; and supported by The Heritage Studies and Public History program the University of Minnesota, and Minnesota Transform, a Mellon Foundation Higher Education Initiative.  Hennepin History Museum brings the diverse history of people in Hennepin County to life. We help people understand their world through an exploration of local history with exhibits, public programs, a magazine, and a public research library.
