Feb. 22, 2022
The Port Jefferson wrestling team put on a great performance at the Section XI Division 2 championships on Feb. 11. Eight Royals completed the day standing on the podium receiving All-County honors.
Junior Beltran finished fourth at 189 pounds and Preston Biedenkapp finished third at 170 pounds to receive All-County honors. Frankie D'Elia (110 pounds), Anthony Evangelista (152 pounds) and Willy Rodriguez Lopez (215 pounds) were county champions. Liam Rogers finished second at 126 pounds, Anthony Pipia finished second at 160 pounds and Cade Delgado finished third at 118 pounds. Evangelista also was awarded Most Pins in the Least Amount of Time, pinning four of his opponents in five minutes and 40 seconds. Wrestlers who finished No. 1 or No. 2 in their weight class received All-County honors and qualified for the NYSPHSAA wrestling championships held on Feb. 25 and 26 at the MVP Arena in Albany. Delgado also received a bid to the NYSPHSAA championship as the current second-place finisher cannot compete due to an injury.
"I am happy for our wrestlers who competed this weekend," coach Mike Maletta said. "Wrestling is a tough sport, and the county and state tournaments are the culmination of months of hard work. To have six wrestlers invited to the party in Albany to represent the nation upstate is exciting. It will be up to Frankie, Cade, Liam, Anthony E., Anthony P. and Willy to make it a memorable trip."
