DUBLIN, CA — A man newly released from the Santa Rita Jail Monday morning helped himself to one of the jail's golf carts, police said. Instead of walking the 1.3 miles to the BART station as many do, the man took a golf cart to get him part of the way there, according to the Alameda County Sherrif's Office.
The cart was ditched at a nearby shopping center, where deputies "found it in one piece."
"Thank you to the newly released inmate who stole our jail golf cart..." officials from the sherriff's office wrote on Twitter Monday. "We know you didn't want to walk the 3 blocks. We are looking to give you a ride back to our jail again."
After the man was released around 8 a.m., he was able to start a groundskeepers' golf cart, which was locked without keys in the ignition, the East Bay Times reported.
The man was reportedly located and returned to the jail, the East Bay Times reported.
