Michigan Beer author Patti F. Smith will discuss Michigan's long history and relationship with beer. While this program is free, we do encourage donations to support the Holland Museum and its programs. Michigan has long been called the Great Lakes State but in the past few decades, it has also become known as the Great Beer State. Author Patti F. Smith will lead a talk highlighting the pioneering brewers from the end of the 19th century through Prohibition and post WWII. Along the way, participants will discover different styles of beer from ales to lagers, how early immigrants brought their distinctive beer styles from their home countries, the story of early Holland brewers, as well as brewing consolidation after the war, and how COVID-19 has altered the brewing landscape. Patti F. Smith Bio: Current special education teacher and former legal aid lawyer Patti F. Smith is the author of three nonfiction books besides Michigan Beer: Vanishing Ann Arbor, Images of America--Downtown Ann Arbor, A History of the People's Food Co-op Ann Arbor. She has written for CraftBeer.com, West Suburban Living magazine, Concentrate, Mittenbrew, The Ann, AADL's Pulp blog, and the Ann Arbor Observer. Patti is a frequent public speaker around town, curating HERsay (an all-woman variety show), GROWN FOLKS READING (story time for grownups), MAY IT PLEASE THE COURT? (all-lawyer show) and telling stories at Ignite, Nerd Nite, Tellabration and Telling Tales Out of School. Patti serves as a commissioner for the Recreation Advisory Commission, as a teacher of history for Rec & Ed, as a storyteller in the Ann Arbor Storytellers' Guild, and volunteers for the Ann Arbor Film Festival and as a DJ for WCBN. She lives with her husband, Ken Anderson in Ann Arbor.
