MILWAUKEE, WI — Schools in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties canceled class Tuesday after freezing rain and ice covered roads in southern and southeast Wisconsin. Both the Waukesha School District and Milwaukee Public Schools closed all schools and classes due to inclement weather and slippery travel conditions, school districts announced Tuesday morning. "Due to the inclement weather and hazardous weather conditions that have created unsafe travel, the School District of Waukesha has canceled classes today, February 22, 2022," the Waukesha School District said in a statement. School districts in cities such as Oak Creek, Shorewood, Wauwatosa, Greendale and Brookfield announced closures as well. Winter Weather Disrupts Roads In Southeast Wisconsin Many roads across southern Wisconsin were covered in ice Tuesday morning and drivers should give extra following space, move over or slow down for flashing lights and keep their wipers and headlights on, the Department of Transportation said in a statement. A hazardous weather outlook was issued to parts of east central, southern and southeast Wisconsin for light freezing rain, sleet and snow that will create slippery conditions for drivers, the National Weather Service reported. A winter weather advisory is in effect for southern Wisconsin until 6 p.m., forecasters said. Snow showers due to the lake effect are possible Wednesday and Thursday.
