Description
PLEASANTON, CA —The Pleasanton City Council will hold its last hearing to decide how to redraw its voting districts on Tuesday.
It's the fourth hearing the council has held on redistricting since it formally decided to switch to district council elections last September 21. The office of mayor will remain at-large and be voted on by the entre city.
A staff report for Tuesday's meeting says, "The purpose of this fourth hearing is for the city council to receive input from the community regarding boundaries and composition of districts and to provide direction regarding final district boundaries and the proposed sequence of elections."
The council will come back to vote on the final map once it's drawn.
California law mandates the city holds at least two public meetings within 30 days of one another before any district map can be drawn. The city is spending $50,000 for outside legal counsel and a demographer to assist the making boundaries. The law requires each district to have roughly the same population. Race can't be the predominant factor and, to the extent practicable, districts should be geographically contiguous and respect the geographic integrity of any local neighborhood or local community of interest. Boundaries can't be drawn to favor one political party.
The Pleasanton City Council will meet virtually at 7 p.m. Thursday. The meeting can be viewed on the city's YouTube channel or by going to https://www.tri-valleytv.org or https://www.youtube.com/user/TheCityofPleasanton. Copyright © 2022 Bay City News, Inc.
