NORTHFIELD, MN — The city of Northfield announced that Dr. Matt Hillmann, the superintendent of Northfield Public Schools, is the 2022 recipient of the city's Human Rights Award. Hillmann was chosen as the winner by The Northfield Human Rights Commission , the city said. According to the city, the award recognizes an individual, group or organization that has contributed to the advancement of human rights in Northfield. Hillmann worked in the school district for seven years before becoming superintendent, the city said. He has been an advocate for equitable access, antiracism and inclusion and supports the Hispanic Parenting Advisory Committee, the city said. Hillmann said he is working to follow in the footsteps of Father Dennis Dempsey, who tragically died after being hit by a car while riding his bike in October, by "having the courage to make sure that we are including everyone in our community and making sure that we are doing the best that we can in removing barriers for people." Dennis Dempsey is a past recipient of this award, according to the city. Those who nominated Hillmann for the award said, "Matt is someone who is passionate about listening to our community, the students and their families. To be a good leader you have to be a great listener. We are very grateful to you for really empowering our voices, helping us make big and impactful changes and caring for the wellbeing of our children." Hillmann received the award at a virtual Martin Luther King Day celebration in January, the city said. Hillmann has a bachelor's degree from St. John's University in New York and a doctorate degree from Minnesota State University Mankato, the city said.
