Here are the top three stories today in Grand Rapids: Kelsey Perdue, 31, has announced her candidacy for a seat on the Grand Rapids City Commission. Perdue has served on several community boards and currently works at the Michigan League for Public Policy but is setting her sights on a seat that would represent the Third Ward of Grand Rapids. The current Commissioner, Senita Lenear, is term-limited. (MLive.com)The Grand Rapids City Commission is holding a ceremony to rename two streets in honor of Cesar E. Chavez and Martin Luther King Jr. on Feb. 22. The event will be open to the public with a ribbon-cutting to take place afterward with city leaders. Franklin Street will become Martin Luther King Jr. Street while Granville Avenue will become Cesar E. Chavez Avenue. (MLive.com)The City of Grand Rapids has hired Paul Haan as its new specialist to help reduce lead poisoning in Grand Rapids homes. Haan will work with the Community Development Department focusing on ways to reduce lead paint hazards that are found in residential rental properties. Haan has served as a part of the state's Child Lead Exposure Elimination Commission in the past.
