Viva Farms is a non-profit farm business incubator and training program with a mission to preserve sustainable farming and create a resilient and just local food system. We do that by empowering aspiring and beginning farmers by providing bilingual (Spanish-English) training in organic farming, as well as access to all the essential resources needed to run a successful farm. We believe that farming must be a viable livelihood in order to protect the social, economic and environmental well-being of our region. The average age of the U.S. farmer is nearly 58 years old. Their imminent retirement (70% are expected to retire in the next 20 years) means the potential loss of critical agricultural knowledge that would impact food security, human health and the environment. Viva Farms started with just five farmers farming on eight acres in 2009. Since then, we have educated over 1,000 small farmers (350+ Spanish speakers) in sustainable organic farming. Today, we are incubating 35 farm businesses on 119 acres of organic farmland across three sites in Skagit and King counties of Washington State. Notably different from national trends, 45% of incubating farm owners are women, 31% of incubating farm businesses are Latino-owned, and the average age of our participants is 36 years old. This is the future of farming.
