Here are the top three stories today in Cincinnati: The University of Cincinnati is researching female mosquitos' transfer RNA changes in an attempt to control their reproduction. Reducing the mosquito population is important because the pest is a carrier of various diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and West Nile virus. The research has been funded through grants provided by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. (University of Cincinnati)The Cincinnati Police Department is conducting an investigation into the Sunday night shooting and murder of 38-year-old Gregory Jefferies. Police arrived at the 500 block of Hawaiian Terrace to discover Jefferies unresponsive with a gunshot wound. The investigation is being led by the department's Homicide Unit and they are instructing anyone with information to contact them. (WLWT Cincinnati)The City of Cincinnati has many deteriorating buildings that are in desperate need of repair but the city does not have the money currently available to meet the increased repair costs. The current budget allocates $2.8 million for building maintenance while the city needs roughly $500 million more to fix aquatic centers, roads, bridges, fire departments, public works buildings, and various other facilities. City officials are considering raising the earning tax or closing down some of the facilities that are in dire need of repair.
