CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH — Crimes of opportunity are up in Cleveland Heights, police announced this week. Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg said residents have reported an increase in thefts from cars and stolen vehicles. "Overwhelmingly, in the majority of these thefts the vehicles were left unlocked with the keys inside. While most of these types of crimes occur during the overnight hours, they can happen at any time," Mecklenburg said. To protect yourself and your property, Mecklenburg offered the following recommendations: Always lock your car, even if you're leaving it unattended for only a short period of timeNever leave your keys in the carRemove any valuables from the car or hide them in the trunk"And remember, if you see anything suspicious, give us a call," Mecklenburg said.
