SUMMARY OF POSITION. The construction laborer performs tasks involving physical labor at building, port, and heavy construction projects, tunnel and shaft excavations, and demolitions sites. May operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earthmovers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying, and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris, remove asbestos, lead, and other hazardous waste materials. ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS. Operates heavy equipment including, but not limited to, backhoes, material handlers, excavators, dozers, and loaders for use in foundation, site grading, material placement, and pipe laying. Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems, pipe supports related to hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for water and wastewater systems. Level earth or asphalt to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, and rakes. Mixes concrete and applies caulking compounds. Smooth and finish freshly poured cement or concrete, using floats, trowels, screeds, or powered cement finishing tools. Spray materials such as water, sand, steam, vinyl, paint, or stucco through hoses to clean, coat, or seal the surface. Lubricate, clean, and repair machinery, equipment, and tools. Operate, read, and maintain air monitoring and other sampling devices in confined and/or hazardous environments. Build and position forms for pouring concrete and dismantle forms after use, using saws, hammers, nails, or bolts. Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards. Dig ditches and trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes. Load, unload, identify building materials, machinery, tools and distribute them to the appropriate locations according to the project plans and specifications. Measure, mark, and record openings and distances to layout areas where construction work will be performed. Aid craft workers, carpenters, plasterers, and masons. Perform all other duties as assigned. REQUIRED EDUCATION. High school or equivalent. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE. Previous experience working in construction, shipyard, or similar industry is highly desirable (Verifiable three (3) years of experience or more). Experience forming, pouring, and finishing concrete pads. Workers are encouraged to ask about jobs, learn about the work being done and seek opportunities to receive on-the-job training. REQUIRED SKILLS. Operation of heavy equipment, pipeline, concrete, and asphalt repair. Must be able to cooperate and work well with other construction employees and shipyard personnel. Must be able to take direction from supervisors or more experienced workers. Must be able to carry out simple to complex instructions in a safe and efficient manner. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS. Must be able to crawl, stoop, bend, and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to lift and move heavy objects (approximately 50-80 pounds). Must be physically able to perform the requirements of the job. May be required to wear a respirator to safely perform assigned tasks. WORKING CONDITIONS. Repetitive, physical work. Regularly exposed to dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, high noise levels, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, ambient weather conditions, hazardous machinery, precarious places, proximity to other employees. Often works on scaffolds and ladders for periods of time. To avoid injury, safety clothing is required along with safety devices to protect eyes, head, or hearing. Shift work and overtime are involved most of the time. Travel may be required. Must have a Valid Florida Drivers License and a clean driving record.
