Description

SHANMUKHA THEATER PRESENTS CHANDALIKA - EQUALITY in HUMANITY A DANCE MUSICAL ADAPTION OF POET RABINDRANATH TAGORE Chandalika is a story of a girl from the untouchable caste of India. Her life as a woman and then as an untouchable woman is full of rejections and ridicule. She questions her existence when one day a Buddhist monk asks her for her, she refuses as a low caste girl cannot give water to a spiritual “high” class monk. The theme of the play Chandalika is the realization by a low caste girl that she is a human being like others, and that it is a mistaken on her part to think herself beneath the notice of human beings who belong to upper castes. Chandalika is a tragedy of self-consciousness over- reaching its limit. Self-consciousness, up to a point, is necessary to self-development; for, without an awareness of the dignity of one's own role or function, one cannot give one's best to the world. Story line The poet Rabindranath gave Prakriti voice and power. Prakriti’s self-realization that she is a human being and entitled to all the rights like others, came from Ananda, the Buddhist monk who quenched his thirst with the water given by her. In a way, he quenched the thirst of her heart. She fell in love with the man who gave her self-esteem. In this one too, Tagore broke new grounds in empowering a woman by bestowing upon her a free spirit, who could go to any extent to get the object of her desire and love. She entreated her mother Maya, who practiced black magic to bring Ananda to her door step, with full knowledge that he was a celibate monk. Artistic Direction & Choreography Guru Samidha Satyam, Guru Dr Sanjay Shantaram and Curated & Directed by Ryan Nathan of Shanmukha Theaters. Chandalika will be assisted by Dancers from Saanskar School of Dance, with over 30 performing artists  SHANMUKHA THEATER PRESENTS " AATHI PARASHAKTI" - – Feminine Divine Energy - NAVARATHRI DANCE DRAMA.
