SAN DIEGO, CA — As the weekend wraps up, we've rounded up all the stories you may have missed Saturday and Sunday to prepare you for Monday. But before we jump into the Northern California's top stories, Golden State residents should know that Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled a bill on Friday that would allow private citizens to sue gun makers, a move that would hinder the ability to sell assault weapons in the state. The legislation borrows tactics from a controversial approach to outlawing most abortions in Texas, in which residents are allowed to sue abortion clinics to stop procedures. Read more about that here. Also, a police officer died on Saturday night in a helicopter crash in Newport Beach. Nicholas Vella, 44, and another officer were were on their way to respond to a "disturbance/fight call" on Saturday evening when the helicopter lost altitude and crashed into Newport Bay near the shore by 18th Street. Read more about that here. "Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Officer Vella. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the entire Huntington Beach Police Department. Officer Vella's bravery and commitment to protecting his community will not be forgotten," Newsom wrote in a statement on Sunday.
