Press release from purplePTSD: December 22, 2020 First off, don't get me wrong, I am not and haven't been a fan of Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer for awhile now. He over invests in a unit that underperforms, when he arguably doesn't even have to. The defenders he's found in later rounds have had a better success rate that the (interior) offensive lineman they grab, almost sarcastically, in the 6th-or-7th rounds. I picked the Vikings to go 6-10 in 2020 and I did say that when that happened Zimmer would be on the hot seat. So, why am I poo-pooing a report that Charean Wiliams (the former President of the Pro Football Writers of America) stating that he said that Zimmer would start 2021 on the "hottest of seats"? Because of the why. "Mike Zimmer has proven to be very aggressive this year — I think more than any other year — and he's gone for it on multiple occasions you probably would question a bit," Williams said on Pro Football Talk. "This is why the Vikings are where they are… on the outside looking in. And why Mike Zimmer's going to go into next season on the hot seat, perhaps the hottest seat of anybody in the NFL." Sure, those calls have been bad. Not just because of the fact that they went for it on 4th-down, but also the plays that they called on those downs (considering the first paragraph, especially). But THAT is what he thinks makes Zimmer vulnerable? Or rather, that's why he thinks these Vikings are on the outside looking in? Both of those sarcastic questions are closely linked by anyone who has watched these 2020 Vikings and maybe Williams meant that those 4th-down calls were a microcosm? But I doubt it. The Vikings are on the outside for a myriad of reasons, a lot of which are an indictment of Zimmer's leadership or lack thereof. They refuse to modernize their offense despite ample talent (because Zimmer loathes risk like I loathe the idea of living into my early 50's). He, again, has prioritized the defense in every single way for results that leave much to be desired. He gets out coached in every big game. He's had everything a head coach could ever ask for (new stadium, world class headquarters, way of doing contracts to get him a QB to help his "only elite when it matters least" Defense, his girlfriend) and has made it to the playoffs every other year while being embarrassed in every appearance (I'm sorry, three (or four if Walsh didn't develop gout) field goals at home?))?) and outside of a decent regular season record (which still has lead to the above "every other" playoff scenario and nothing else. But yeah, Rick Spielman is going to put his foot down because of a couple of 4th-down calls when he hasn't already. Especially when this report exists? [Report] Things are BAD in Zimmerland The reality is that Zimmer will (and even I think should) get a pass because of the injuries this defense suffered in 2020. I'm not a fan or how he purposely limits one of the most talented offenses in the NFL, and I don't think he'll ever get over the hump, but if he wasn't fired for that by now? Why dump him because of a couple of 4th down calls? This press release was produced by purplePTSD. The views expressed here are the author's own.
