Cupertino Donut Shop Standoff Ends Without Shots Fired

CUPERTINO, CA — A standoff with an armed suspect inside a Cupertino donut shop Monday evening ended without shots being fired, Santa Clara County sheriff's officials said. Around 7 p.m., the suspect ran out of the shop and was stopped by a K-9, but not until deputies negotiated for hours. The suspect was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to sheriff's officials. The suspect went to the donut shop after he allegedly stole about $200 of merchandise from a Staples store at 20830 Stevens Creek Blvd. in Cupertino. Deputies went at 4:09 p.m. to Staples because someone called to tell them a theft was taking place. The suspect apparently took some items and was acting aggressively toward employees. Sheriff's officials said deputies tried to stop the suspect outside of the Staples store. But he pulled out a knife and ran toward De Anza Boulevard and into the Donut Wheel. Deputies surrounded the shop and negotiated with the suspect until he ran from the shop. Inside the shop the suspect appeared to have taken cash from the cash register and set a garbage can on fire, sheriff's officials said. He is being arrested on suspicion of theft, resisting arrest, brandishing a knife, attempted carjacking and arson, according to the sheriff's office.
