"Her grandmother would take her into a village where her friends would weave baskets," and this impressed the young girl so much, that she started to weave her own baskets. She said, "By the time I went to the university of Nairobi where I majored in design, I discovered I had already had the initial grounding in the profession." Wanjiku, who has lived in San Antonio for 20 years, recalls seeing recycled cans and being intrigued by their rust and patterns. She immediately thought of the Mabati women who used sheet metal as roofs to collect clean water, so she started to experiment with sheet metal in her art. "Mabati means sheet metal, and The Mabati Women's group formed in Kenya in the 1960's." Through her metal artwork, Wanjiku now honors her grandmother and The Mabati Women's group. Wanjiku's artwork is currently on display at the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA), located at 200 West Jones Ave., and it can also be viewed online here.
