Hello again, Charleston! Important update: You all, as readers, have made the Charleston Daily so successful that it is my honor to announce the next stage of the newsletter. Patch is looking for a local writer and entrepreneur to take the helm of the Charleston Daily. Although I have loved getting to know this community, we want to pass the torch to someone truly local to write about Charleston long term. So if you're interested in earning extra income while making this newsletter a more valuable resource for your neighbors, learn more and apply here. First, today's weather: Plenty of sun. High: 59 Low: 37. Here are the top 3 stories in Charleston today: On Thursday afternoon, a survey marker for the historic African American community, Scanlonville was discovered. Archaeologists and Scanlonville residents collaborated and were able to get the 500-plus pound marker out of the ground. Scanlonville community members did so as a way to honor their community after 152 years. This historic survey marker has been donated and will be on display at the Charleston Museum at a to be determined date. (WBTW)Charleston County's comment period for the Better North Bridge project will last until March 3. Currently, the public will see three alternatives, calling for a bicycle and pedestrian bridge adjacent to the existing North Bridge between West Ashley and North Charleston. After having several studies conducted between 2008 and 2011 by the county, this project was identified as the solution to allow for safe foot and bike travel over the river. To make sure that all residents have a chance to participate, Charleston Moves will be hosting several outdoor tabling sessions on the West Ashley and North Charleston sides of the bridge. (holycitysinner.com) Late Thursday night, a fire damaged three North Charleston businesses at a shopping center on Rivers Avenue. A report by the fire department states that fire crews found "heavy fire" conditions when they arrived at the scene. Three of the four suites were occupied by businesses, with fire damage extensive to one business, while the other two businesses are dealing with smoke and water damage. No injuries have been reported, and there is currently an ongoing fire investigation into how and where the fire started.
