Press release from the City of Poway: February 18, 2022 The 120-day window of opportunity to gather signatures for a recall effort against Poway Mayor Steve Vaus ended at the close of business Thursday, Feb. 17. Christopher Olps, the Chief Proponent of the Recall Mayor Vaus effort, failed to return signed petitions to the City of Poway Elections Official (the City Clerk). The process for gathering signatures for a recall effort is determined by the California Elections Code. On Oct. 21, 2021, the City Clerk notified the Chief Proponent of the Recall Mayor Vaus effort that the recall petition submitted met the requirements of California Elections Code and signature gathering could commence. The Chief Proponent was also informed, pursuant to Elections Code Section 11220, the petition needed to be filed with the City Clerk's office not later than 120 days from Oct. 21, 2021, which was the close of normal office hours on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022.  Also, pursuant to Elections Code Section 11221, in order for the petition to move forward, it would need to be signed by not less than 20% of the registered voters in the city.
