SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A driver is sought in connection with a fatal hit-and-run of a pedestrian early Thursday on U.S. Highway 101 near Healdsburg.
Santa Rosa California Highway Patrol officers responded at 12:32 a.m. Thursday to the southbound side of the freeway, just south of Limerick Lane, where a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said.
"The pedestrian was observed lying in the roadway and was pronounced deceased by medical personnel," CHP Officer David deRutte said.
The CHP's preliminary investigation revealed a Kelseyville man driving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck ran out of gas and stopped on the southbound right shoulder. While he walked to get gas, his female passenger stayed with the truck, deRutte said.
When the driver came back with the gas, he found the woman lying in the roadway and called 911.
"The suspect vehicle fled the scene after the crash," deRutte said. "The investigation is ongoing, but evidence indicates the suspect vehicle is a silver or similar colored 2019-2021 Ram truck."
The Ram has body damage to the right front and possibly on the right side, according to the CHP.
"The Ram truck and driver have not yet been located, but we are investigating multiple leads," deRutte said Friday afternoon. "Please contact the Santa Rosa CHP Office at (707)588-1400 if you have any information regarding this incident."
