He was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail and later released after his bond was set at $1,000. No officers from the University of Alabama Police Department were involved in the arrest made by the multi-agency unit. In a statement from UA President Stuart R. Bell, it was confirmed that Pope had resigned from his position with the university following his arrest. "We understand this news will be difficult for our community," he said. "I will appoint an interim Vice President of Student Life and that person, along with the many professionals in the division, will remain available to all of us. Please continue to take care of yourselves and one another." Pope is a native of Sweet Water and was a walk-on member of the Alabama Crimson Tide's 1992 national championship football team. Following graduation, he would go on to be a member of the administrative staff at UA, serving as director of recruitment programs/alternative certification from 1997 to 2000 and as a clinical assistant professor in the higher education administrative program. Pope would then spend a large part of his education career in Oklahoma, working in student affairs and enrollment management at the University of Central Oklahoma. This, according to the University of Alabama, included 14 years in vice presidential roles. He was named to the position of vice president of Student Life in February 2020. This is a developing story. Tuscaloosa Patch will have more information as it comes available.
