Responsible for guiding and controlling traffic activity at assigned crossing areas in order to provide safe crossing for pedestrians, as well as other assistance to visitors. Crossing guards are assigned to various shifts throughout the day when tour ships are tied up to local docks. JOB DUTIES Provide visitors and residents safe, controlled crosswalks in designated areas in downtown Juneau. Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at specified crossing areas. Directs actions of pedestrians and traffic at intersections. Escorts pedestrians across street/crosswalk. Directs movement of traffic through site, using signs, flags, and hand signals. Provide assistance to downtown visitors. Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned. NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Excellent communication and customer service skills. Ability to learn, understand, and follow oral and written instructions/directions. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees. Ability to work directly with the public, providing information and assistance on a daily basis. Knowledge in safety issues related to traffic activity. Ability to be outdoors in any and all weather conditions. Ability to stand for long periods of time in all types of weather. Ability to cover assigned shifts between the hours of 8am and 7pm daily as determined by the cruise ship schedule. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills) High school diploma or equivalent. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Ability to pass a background check. Ability to obtain a Flagger Certificate issued by the State of Alaska. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills) Current CPR and first aid certificates; drug testing may be required. WORKING CONDITIONS Constant movement on/off traffic crosswalks, and extended periods of standing; constant public interaction and communication; constant exposure to the elements.
