The Parkway is thrilled to present the Twin Cities premiere of seasons 2 & 3 of The Van Deusens, a compelling episodic series created by acclaimed director Toussaint Morrison, a renowned hip-hop musician and former host & producer of the Emmy-winning PBS series, America From Scratch. This special screening showcases the unreleased 2nd and 3rd season of The Van Deusens. Morrison will also be on-hand for a post-screening Q&A and discussion. The Van Deusens is an episodic series that follows a family of four emboldened by their greatest challenge: To persevere in a time when mental illness, being a person of color, and/or being a woman has reached a critical line to be seen and treated as human. Dancing on the precipice of divorce and rehabilitation in a passive, white, affluent, Midwestern city, each family member is pressed firmly against their environment and each other. As the inherent pressure builds, the Van Deusens find which parts of themselves they've been withholding, and what walls they'll need to let down in order to stay together. Toussaint Morrison is an Emmy Award winner and an American director whose films and episodic series have addressed themes such as the double consciousness of the African-American identity, being racially ambiguous in predominantly white communities, and living in an underserved and neglected neighborhood. More than a modicum of his influence stems from his childhood growing up in a single-parent household, where Morrison was privy to visiting his mother’s work at many a hospital where she worked as a cancer nurse. Themes of mortality, serving end-of-life experience, and quality of life undoubtedly weave themselves into Morrison’s work, whether he says he's conscious of it or not. The Van Deusens is an episodic series willed by Morrison's Patreon and his stubbornness. Once all 30 episodes are locked, loaded, and scheduled to premiere on YouTube, he's going to take a nap.
