BROOKLINE, MA — Rep. Tommy Vitolo voted in support of the Work and Family Mobility Act, which will allow all residents of Massachusetts to apply for a standard driver's license regardless of immigration status. Supporters of the bill argue that by allowing undocumented residents to become licensed, more drivers will learn the rules of the road, pass the Registry of Motor Vehicle's written and road tests, and become properly licensed and insured, thereby creating safer roads for everyone. "In many places in Massachusetts, a driver's license is essential to access health care, get to work, or otherwise get from here to there," said Vitolo in a statement. "I voted in support of this legislation because every resident, regardless of immigration status, deserves the dignity of full engagement within their community." To apply for a standard driver's license, applicants will need to provide at least two documents to prove their identity and date of birth. All documents written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified translation to English. To protect applicants' privacy, the legislation prohibits the RMV from disclosing any information about applicants for and holders of a standard driver's license except as authorized by regulations promulgated by the Attorney General. The legislation will now go to the Senate before reaching the Governor's desk to being signed into law.
