Pedestrian Safety Project Money Coming To Camden County

CAMDEN COUNTY, NJ — Several pedestrian safety projects in Camden County will get state funding, the governor's office announced earlier this week. Governor Phil Murphy announced Tuesday that the state is giving $8.6 million across 19 municipalities for Safe Streets to Transit pedestrian safety projects. The Safe Streets to Transit (SSTT) program is funded by the state. Money assists counties and municipalities "to improve the overall safety and accessibility for mass transit riders walking to transit facilities," according to the NJ Department of Transportation. "The program encourages transit users to walk to transit stations, and facilitates the implementation of projects and activities that will improve pedestrian conditions within a 1-mile radius of a transit facility or station." These two Camden County projects will receive state money this year: Collingswood Safe Routes ADA Ramps, Collingswood Borough ($370,000)Evesham Road Sidewalk Phase II, Voorhees Township ($200,000) Usually, there is $1 million available through SSTT each year; two additional funding sources allowed the state to divvy up a larger pot of money in 2022. Projects are awarded on a competitive basis.
