LA GRANGE, IL — Lyons Township High School is considering going mask optional starting Feb. 28, when the state lifts its mask mandate for most public places, the superintendent announced Friday.
This decision comes after protests and mask opponents' comments at this week's school board meeting.
In his announcement, Superintendent Brian Waterman said his administration plans to present the mask issue at Tuesday's school board meeting.
"Whether you believe this potential transition is occurring far too early or far too late, we all (staff, parents/guardians, and community) share a collective responsibility in setting a strong example of respect and kindness in every interaction," Waterman said.
Waterman said the masking requirement remains in effect. He said the school will share more details about the transition in classroom discussions over the next week.
He noted a state appeals court ruling on Thursday that upheld local control on the mask issue. Gov. J.B. Pritzker is taking the fight for the statewide mask mandate for schools to the state Supreme Court.
