Here are the top 3 stories today in Grand Rapids: Former President of the Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Educations has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Grand Rapids City Commission. Rev. Kenneth Hoskins reports that his candidacy is focused on finding solutions to housing, gun violence, and education for the community of Grand Rapids. The seat the Hoskins is looking to fill represents the city's Third Ward. (MLive.com)A Grand Rapids coat drive directed by the Mayor's Youth Council and the Grand Rapids Public Library is seeking to distribute winter clothing to the city's youth. The drive will be collecting gloves, hats, coats, and various winter clothing items through Mar. 4 at various public library branches throughout the city. The collected items will be distributed at the Baxter Community Center, the Grandville Avenue Arts & Humanities, the Hispanic Center of West Michigan, and the Aya Youth Collective to keep citizens warm during the dropping temperatures. (WOODTV.com)The Grand Rapids Police Department is investigating a shooting that resulted in a man being admitted to a local hospital in critical condition. The incident was reported to the department around 7:30 p.m. from outside the Mobile Gas Station on Burton Street Southwest. The shooting victim arrived at a local hospital on his own while the department was conducting the investigation into the shooting. Anyone with information has been instructed to contact the Silent Observer or the Grand Rapids Police Department.
