Why do I have to join a gang to vote?

I went to go resister to vote. I was asked what gang I wanted to join. A Republican was the first one out of there mouths then Independent and the last was Democratic. I asked to register as an individual but was told I had to join one of the gangs. I picked independent and now I learn voting rights are changing in Wyoming there trying to change the law there where you can only vote for the gang you signed up with. I ask you all a question, why can't a person register in New Hampshire as an individual? Or any other state?
