Wake County Closes Four Buildings On June 1 Due To Damage

Press release from the Wake County Government: May 31, 2020 Wake County is closing four of its buildings in downtown Raleigh on Monday, June 1, due to damage sustained when yesterday's peaceful protest turned into civil unrest last night. They include the: Wake County Courthouse; Wake County Justice Center; Wake County Office Building; and Wake County Public Safety Center. These buildings sustained enough damage to create safety and security concerns. The facilities will remain closed through at least Monday to all residents and non-public safety employees. "While the Wake County Board of Commissioners will always advocate for peaceful demonstration to ensure that all voices are heard, we support our colleagues at the City of Raleigh in saying that violence and destruction is never acceptable," said Chairman Greg Ford. "It only diminishes the power of a positive message in a quest for change." The county will decide on a day-by-day basis when to reopen the affected facilities. As a result of the county's ongoing response to COVID-19, most staff in these buildings are already working remotely, and the impact on public services should be minimal.
