6 week Transgender focused self defense course created by transfemme martial arts instructor Kira Knight. (6 sessions @ 90 mins. each) Greetings Friends. As Transgender people we may often feel uncomfortable, unsafe or unrepresented in many spaces, especially those involving martial arts and self defense. Transfemme individual and Martial arts Instructor, Kira Knight (They/She) has partnered with Blank Canvas Massage to bring a self defense workshop to the trans community of the Atlanta area. The program will be 6 classes over 6 weeks and will focus on basic core self defense concepts to help individuals feel safer and more confident in their ability to defend themselves if the need arises. The program is derived from the Martial arts systems of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do (made famous by Bruce Lee) and Mixed Martial arts (MMA). Kira has been providing martial arts to the community for over 13 years and has instructor’s certifications in both Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do and has coached people of all fitness levels from complete beginners to professional fighters. The Workshop will be specifically for Transgender and Nonbinary people. Students will need a basic pair of fingerless MMA gloves and a mouth guard by the 3rd class. Due to limited space and the ongoing pandemic, the workshop will be limited to 8 people. The workshop will be 6 classes (90 mins per class) over 6 weeks. (1 class per week) Vaccinations required and vaccine cards will need to be presented at the first class. (we want to keep everyone as safe as possible) If you can't make the workshop, Kira also provides private instruction and can be contacted to schedule private lessons via email: [email protected] The Workshop dates will be 3/16/22, 3/23/22, 3/30/22, 4/6/22, 4/13/22 and 4/20/22 , all Wednesday nights, starting at 6:30pm and going until 8:30pm and will be at Blank Canvas Massage in Atlanta. I have a lot of anxiety about physical-anything but especially w.r.t. things that require coordinated motor functions but none of my anxiety comes up in this class. I feel like I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time I can actually use should the need ever arise. One of my favorite parts is that there is a lot I can practice without needing a sparring partner as well."
