MASSAPEQUA, NY — A Long Island dentist was arrested Wednesday after police say he was found to be in possession of more than a dozen illegal guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition. According to police, a 33-year-old woman was working at the in-home dental office of Paul Carey, located on Riviera Drive in Massapequa. At 1:50 p.m., police say Carey, 62, called out the woman's name multiple times. When she looked up a flight of stairs to see what he wanted, police say she saw him holding a handgun. The woman left the building and called police. Police say Emergency Services and the Bureau of Special Operations responded to the scene and arrested Carey without incident. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation. During a search of Carey's home, police say they found 20 illegal long guns, seven silencers, 61 high-capacity magazines and about 3,000 rounds of ammunition. Police say 18 of the guns were "ghost guns," which are guns with no serial numbers. Carey is charged with first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead and ordered held on bail of $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond, which was not yet posted. He was previously arrested and charged with drunk driving in 2020, and was arrested again for drunk driving, as well as assault, in 2021. Both cases are still pending, according to court documents.
