Description

Join Detroit Audubon and Arboretum Detroit for some spring clean up at Callahan Park, our first Detroit Bird City park! We will be working with Arboretum Detroit to clean up the pathways by laying fresh wood chips, remove invasive plants, pick up trash and plant a couple bird friendly shrubs. We will have plenty of supplies but feel free to bring your own work gloves, trowels for weeding, shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows for moving wood chips. Callahan Park is part of the Detroit Bird City project to restore native bird and pollinator habitat in disused Detroit city parks. Before restoration Callahan was indistinguishable from a vacant lot with overgrown grass and plenty of trash. In 2019 we planted the two acre park with 39 different kinds of native flowers and 6 varieties of native grasses. This past Summer the park bloomed beautifully and we will add another two acres of wildflower meadow to Callahan Park this Spring! Since the meadow has bloomed, several bird species have been spotted there, including the Indigo Bunting, American Goldfinch, Grey Catbird, native sparrows and Ring-necked Pheasants. Many Monarch butterflies have been observed at the site as well. Arboretum Detroit is a non-profit organization dedicated to building and maintaining perpetuity and intentionality recognized arboretum spanning the city and inspiring visitors with the love and stewardship of trees. We ask that if you have been exposed to anyone with Covid-19 or are feeling unwell to please stay home ***After registering, you will receive Detroit Audubon's bi-monthly e-newsletter, Flyway Express. You may unsubscribe at any time. ***   Our mission is to foster appreciation and conservation of birds and the environment we share. Our mission pillars are: Education, Research, and Action.
