San Mateo Pet Shelter Waives Adoption Fees For Pigeons: Photos

SAN MATEO, CA — Pigeons are available for adoption in San Mateo County courtesy of the Peninsula Humane Society, which waived adoption fees on pet pigeons this week. The Tom and Annette Lantos Center for Compassion in Burlingame and the Coyote Point Shelter in San Mateo are hosting adoptions. Six pigeons are currently available for adoption, including a bonded pair of adult pigeons named Morticia and Gomez. "Domesticated pigeons make fabulous pets and we're hoping through our Ok-coo-pid adoption promotion, people will consider adding a pet pigeon to their home," said Buffy Martin Tarbox, PHS/SPCA's Communications Manager. Domestic pigeons are smart, social, gentle and quiet birds, according to Tarbox. They cannot survive in the wild because they are selectively bred. They can adapt easily to living indoors and can even be potty-trained, Tarbox said. The Tom and Annette Lantos Center for Compassion is located at 1450 Rollins Road in Burlingame and the Coyote Point Shelter is at 12 Airport Boulevard in San Mateo. The shelters are open from 1 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Visit phs-spca.org for more information.
