2 Iredell Elementary Schools Report COVID-19 Cases

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — Two elementary schools in Iredell County reported positive COVID-19 cases last week, according to Iredell-Statesville Schools. The news comes as county health data indicates the spread of the virus increased by at least 35 lab-confirmed positive cases reported since Friday afternoon. The number of COVID-19 cases in Iredell County rose to 2,821 Monday afternoon, according the Iredell County Health Department said. As of Sept. 14, at least 33 Iredell County residents had died from coronavirus-related illness. Iredell County Health Department said that 13 county residents remained hospitalized for COVID-19 illness as of Monday, eight fewer than reported Friday afternoon. Out of the total tally of known cases in the county, 328 residents remained isolated in their homes and an estimated 2,447 cases were assumed recovered. The school district, which is comprised of 37 schools, reports weekly the number of COVID-19 cases present in its schools, however, does not indicate if the cases are of students, teachers or staff. On Aug. 17, all seventh graders at Third Creek Middle Schools in Statesville began the school year with two weeks of remote learning after a COVID-19 case was confirmed associated with the school. The following week, the district reported a dozen positive COVID-19 cases , and during the week of Aug. 31, at least eight positive coronavirus cases were reported at seven ISS schools. During the week of Sept. 7, two schools reported positive COVID-19 cases. In the United States, more than 6.5 million people have been infected and more than 194,000 people have died from COVID-19.
