GLENDALE, AZ —An 8-year-old girl was shot and killed overnight in Glendale while riding in a vehicle with three other people after one of the passengers had been involved in a verbal altercation, Glendale Police said. The initial altercation took place just after midnight near 65th Ave and Bethany Home Road, according to police. The shots were fired from another vehicle, a sedan. The driver of that car then fled and remains at large. Police said they don't know how many suspects were involved. The girl, whose identity has not been revealed, was shot multiple times and died at a local hospital. No one else was injured, police said. According to preliminary reports by Glendale police, the 8-year-old girl was in a vehicle with her mother and a younger sibling when they went to pick up the mother's boyfriend at a parking lot near 65th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. While waiting to be picked up, the boyfriend was involved in some type of verbal altercation with a person in another vehicle. That vehicle left and headed eastbound on Bethany Home road. The boyfriend then got into the car with the mother and two children and also headed eastbound on Bethany Home Road. Police said somewhere on Bethany Home Road between 65th Avenue and 55th Avenue a suspect in a sedan fired at the vehicle with the four people inside, hitting the 8-year-old child. The mother drove the child to the hospital. Police said they initially responded to a ShotSpotter call at the scene and located one shell casing in the street near the area of the call. About 10 minutes later, the Glendale Police Department received a call from a male notifying them that the female victim had been shot and taken to the hospital. Officers then responded to the hospital and learned the 8-year-old female had died from her injuries.
