ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — Twenty-four hours after a tanker-turned-fireball on Sunrise Highway, the roadway reopened.
The truck dumped fuel and crashed into the former Laz-E-Boy store at North Centre Avenue just after 1 a.m. Wed.
The driver, though, was able to escape his vehicle without any serious injury. Three firefighters sustained minor injuries, two were treated at a hospital, the village of Rockville Centre.
The extensive investigation and cleanup were completed as Sunrise Highway resumed normal traffic by 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nassau police said.
Power was shut as a precaution to many customers, with the final restoration in place by 2:30 p.m. on Wed., the village spokesperson said.
Flames were seen in the streets, spewing out of manhole covers and into Mill River, causing the Department of Environmental Conservation and other agencies to react quickly to the incident..
