MOORESVILLE, NC — As returns continued to come around the U.S. Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump's narrow unofficial victory in North Carolina Tuesday night was in line with his past performance in 2016, according to state voting day. Comparing the two presidential races, Trump's share of the statewide vote rose slightly from 49.83 percent in 2016 to 49.98 percent in the Nov. 3 election.
As of Wednesday morning, Trump maintained a narrow lead in North Carolina over former Vice President Joe Biden. Unofficial returns as of 12:30 a.m. Nov. 4 showed Trump beating Biden by a margin of about 76,000 votes, however, about 117,000 absentee ballots remained outstanding, according to state election officials.
In North Carolina, ballots that are post marked Nov. 3 and received by Nov. 12 will be counted.
So how did Trump's support in Iredell County compare with his vote totals in 2016, when he was running against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?
According to the unofficial returns from North Carolina State Board of Elections, Trump lost support in 2020 among Iredell County voters.
In 2016, he earned a 66.3 percent share of the county's votes compared to 65.6 percent of votes in 2020.
Tuesday's vote climaxed a heated battle for control of the White House, unfolding during a pandemic that killed nearly a quarter of a million Americans before Election Day.
